Hello!
It’s time for another look at what miniatures I’ll be working on in the coming weeks…
Firstly I will be releasing the next Imperial Assault video – Verena Talos from the Return to Hoth expansion – followed by the awesome Elementals from Descent (the remaining heroes will follow in due course!).
Next up in the Imperial Assault series will be the amazing Captain Terro on his Dewback, as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi – both of which you can see primed and ready above.
For Zombicide Black Plague I will be painting the sword-wielding barmaid Nelly, which leaves just two heroes from the core set! (I haven’t forgotten about Blood Rage either, and I’ll be painting the third monster from the base set in June.)
Finally, I’d like to thank my patrons for helping me reach the next funding milestone which has enabled me to purchase yet another camera upgrade. The new camera I’m getting has several benefits for the kind of filming I do, the most obvious benefit to you the viewer however is that all of my content will be shot in glorious 4K. Even if you don’t have a full 4K display (I don’t!) I think you’ll still see a marked improvement in clarity.

This said, I really wish you would stick more to the original release schedule for Imperial Assault, as there is still a lot of uncovered models on Return to Hoth, nothing apart from Lando and Greedo on The Bespin Gambit, and you have already covered (or will cover soon) 4 minis from Jabba’s Realm which has not been released anywhere except in the US…
When you explained your plan for future content a couple months ago, you said you would mostly keep to the release order with sometimes an exception for specific iconic miniatures… Taking into account your plans for Obi-Wan & Captain Terro, that makes 4 out of 5 minis out of schedule.
Right now I’m sitting on a large pile of miniatures without tutorials, and I’m seeing all those incredible videos coming out for miniatures I won’t be able to buy for several months…. 🙁

Hi Etienne! I understand your position and I really am in a situation where I can’t please everyone when it comes to the release order. As you know it’s the patrons who actually vote on the order in which I paint the miniatures and that’s something that I really can’t go against. Historically the votes have loosely followed the release order, but it seems that the Jabba’s Realm minis have just been too tempting for the voters which is something I couldn’t have predicted! I’ll do my best to maintain balance however and continue to cover some of the earlier and simpler miniatures in the form of Patreon quick guides (like I did for the Hired Guns and Wookie Warriors) such as the Snow Troopers and the Echo Base Troopers 🙂
Thanks for the answer. Quick question, are the votes for 10$+ Patreons open on all minis that have not been covered, or do you provide a pre-selection ?
The voters can pick whatever minis they want from the game – I don’t provide a selection. (Although I do pick when I’m going to cover a particular game – like Zombicide or Blood Rage, but the individual minis are decided entirely by vote). 🙂
Wow, can’t wait for Nelly, I’ve been holding off on the core set Zombicide Black Plague mini’s until you release a video. I do have to admit it’s been hard, though forcing myself to use a lot of the techniques I’ve learned from your videos has been a fun challenge on the expansion heroes. Hopefully Baldric and Samson are on the list soon! I’m a few expansions behind on Imperial Assault but I still have to watch all the videos!

Greetings from Australia! I first found your videos online when I was considering purchasing Imperial Assault a couple of years ago. At the time I was trying to work out whether it would be possible to play the game with my 9, 7 and 5 year old sons, who all love Star Wars, but I was worried were too young at the time. I ended up taking the plunge anyway, tipped over the edge by how amazing, accessible and achievable your videos made the painting look.
We have not been disappointed – with the game or the painting thereof! My boys immediately ate up the game in all of its depth and strategy, my 9 year old often corrected me on the rules and the 5 year old stayed incredibly engaged in extended sessions. Turns out my older two boys are now just as excited about painting the miniatures as playing the game. I’ve helped them carefully follow your guides – they’ve painted probe droids, royal guards and Boba Fett with amazing results. Pleasant surprises all around, so many good times for us and I wanted to thank you for your part in it!
I actually want to ask you a question, but felt the need to thank you first – sorry for the longwinded introduction!
So, I’ve noticed your recent shift to priming with the zenithal highlight method. I don’t current have an airbrush and probably couldn’t justify spending the money on one in the near future. You’ve mentioned that priming with flat black, white or grey would also be fine, but I think it’s safe to assume you wouldn’t bother with the zenithal priming if there wasn’t a noticeably superior finish. Can you describe exactly how a zenithal primed miniature would have a better finish than one primed with a single colour? And is there any extra steps I can do to simulate or compensate on a single colour primed figure?

Hi Brad! Thanks so much for the kind message! My own kids are 9 and 4 so I know how precious those shared gaming experiences are! Regarding your question RE priming: There are several advantages to using a zenithal pre-shade, but they’re mostly to do with making the painting process easier rather than really affecting the finished result. Sometimes (like with my Blood Rage Frost Giant) the pre-shade forms an important part of the finished look but however, but that’s an example where I’ve used deliberately thin base colours to allow the zenithal highlights to show through. I’m planning to make a video on the subject of priming actually so I won’t go into too much detail here, but you don’t need an airbrush to provide a zentithal pre-shade: Just prime in black as usual then provide a quick blast with some white from above! 🙂

In your videos your models are so pristine at the start. A priming video would be great. I’d also be interested on how you prepare your models even before that. Do you wash them? How do you get rid of the mold lines so cleanly and thoroughly, especially on models with fur or hair? Thank you for your fantastic tutorials.

Hi David! I backed the 2nd edition so I’ll wait and see how I feel about the minis once they arrive. I’m pretty excited to dive into the game!
